This chapter
focuses on the way of work and the way of renunciation also called
sankhya. Therefore this chapter is entitled "The yoga of
Renunciation of Action".

The blessed Lord said :
The renunciation of the works and their performance without
attachment, both lead to the salvation. But of the two doing the
work without attachment is better.

sukham bandhat pramuchyate

The one, who neither likes nor
dislikes, he should be recognised as having the spirit of

The ignorants differenciate
between renunciation (sankhya) and performance of work with
detachment (yoga), not for the wise. A person devoted to any way
obtains the fruits of both.

sthanam tat yogaih api gamyate
ekam samkhayam cha yogam
chayah pashyati sah pashyanti

The state attained by the men
of renunciation is also attained by the men ot action. To see that
both the ways are one, is to see the truly.

O, Arjuna however, it is
difficult it to attain renunciation without yoga. The wise who is
steeped in the way of yoga reaches the ultimate goal quickly.

Who has toiled in the path of
a action and has a prior soul, who has subdued the senses and has

The one who has become one
with the god and knows the truth believes "I do not act at all"
because seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, tasting, walking,
sleeping, breathing, speaking, leaving, taking, opening and shutting
the eyes he understands that only the senses are acting upon the
objects of senses.

sanga tyaktva karoti yah

Who works without attachment,
resigning his works to God, is not touched by sin like a lotus leaf

The yogis do work only with,
the body, mind and intelligence, foresaking attachment for the
purification of their souls.

The devoted yogis, detached to
the fruits of their actions, attains peace but one whose soul is not
immersed into divine, is attached to the fruits and remain under
bondage.

The yogi, who has controlled
his senses through renunication lives in this house of nine gates
(body) at peace, neither working nor causing the work to be done by
others.

The supreme being does not
create for the people the action or the doer of the act. He also
does not cause the action to be united with its fruits. The nature
does all these things.

The all pervading God does not
accept sins of someone or his good deeds. Wisdom is under the cover
of ignorance, this causes illusion among the living.

But the persons whose
ignorance is destroyed by knowledge, for them, knowledge lights up

Contemplating on self and
directing ones total consciousness towards self making self as the
sole object of devotion, they reach the state from where there is no
return possible, and their sins are perished through wisdom.

A learned and humble brahmin,
a cow, an elephant, and even a dog or an outcaste are equal in the
eyes of the sage.

Those whose mind is set in
equality, conquer this world while living here, God is free of sins
and even to all. Therefore, these (persons) are settled in God.

One should not feel happy on
getting something pleasant not should one be unhappy if something
unpleasant occurs; One who is steady in such wisdom and unperturbed,
such known person of the truth resides in God.

sah brahmayogayuktatma
sukham akshayam ashnute.

When the self is not attached
with the wordly objects one reach the happiness which is in the
self. Such a one, who is disciplined in yoga with God, finds
unlimited bliss.

Pleasures resulting from the
contact of senses with the objects only cause misery and they are
temporary, O Arjuna, no wiseman finds pleasure in these.

One who can withstand the wave
of desire and anger is a yogi here in this world, he enjoys peace.

The one who attains peace in

The pious, whose sins are
destroyed, whose duality is cut through, whose minds are
single-pointed abide in God, who work for the welfare of all, attain

Those who observe stern

Unmindful of all external
objects fixing the sight between the eyebrows, making even the
inwards and outwards breaths moving through the nostrils.

The sage, having controlled
the senses, mind and intelligence, keen about liberation of his
